Current Projects

The following is a summary description of projects conducted by the South Jersey RC&D Council. For more detailed information on a project please select the appropriate link on the left.

R.I.S.E. Network

The R.I.S.E (Resource Information Serving Everyone) is a network of 20 weather stations installed throughout South Jersey that record temperature, wind speed and direction, rainfall, relative humidity, and solar radiation. These readings are performed hourly and automatically transmitted to a central computer. Subscribers to this network receive this information daily to assist with irrigation water scheduling, pest management, storm water modeling and water company pumping.

The Council, partnered with United Water of Toms River, proposes to install additional weather stations in New Jersey, Delaware, and New York in the 2006-7 timeframe. United Water has reduced water usage by close to one half million gallons per day through the use of this system.

Team Habitat

The Mission of Team Habitat is to coordinate the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of habitat for all wildlife species that live in or migrate through New Jersey. Team Habitat is a group of dedicated conservationists working to provide habitat for all wildlife species by creating, enhancing and maintaining quality habitat throughout New Jersey.  Team Habitat will use wildlife and natural resource professionals to direct a paid and volunteer work force in performing habitat projects.

Buchshutem Wildlife Management Area
before Team Habitat

The South Jersey RC&D Council joined forces with the Southern Jersey Chapter of Quail Unlimited to develop a plan to enhance a major southern NJ Wildlife Management Area owned by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife.  This unique plan called for major vegetative manipulation over a period of years thereby creating habitat much better suited for such wildlife as quail, wild turkey, rabbits, deer, and many species of non-game wildlife.  Last year this partnership planted a 120 acre patch to warm season grasses for grassland birds and butterflies on the Buckshutem WMA. This project shows what a public/private partnership can do to enhance wildlife habitat and improve the quality of life within a watershed.

SJRCD Internet Website

The Council created an Internet homepage to inform its customers and the public at large of the work being done. With the advent of the joint-venture between the Council and Weather Access, the Council received free web housing. Council has edited most files on the R.I.S.E. BBS to conform to WWW requirements. Initially over 160 files were merged together and placed on the new WWW site at http://www.wxaccess.com/sjrcd . The website has since been relocated to http://www.sjrcd.org.

Future projects include an update to the website that will provide real time weather information and graphical displays. Keep checking back to see the progress.

Delaware Estuary Levee Organization

Is New Jersey protected from a major flood? Evidence suggests that we are not. The state’s flood control infrastructure is old and crumbling, responsibility is fragmented and uncoordinated. It is in the state’s best interests to maintain or improve its levee infrastructure. South Jersey’s ancient flood protection provides many benefits to local residents as well as everyone else.

SJRC&D was the catalyst for forming the Delaware Estuary Levee Organization to identify, update, and ensure maintanance forthe 35+ levees located throughout South Jersey.

  • Preventing major floods in agricultural, residential, commercial and industrial areas
  • Protecting domestic and agricultural irrigation water supplies from saltwater intrusion
  • Preserving fish and wildlife
  • Allowing additional arable land for agricultural uses, including remaining salt hay production
  • Controlling mosquitoes and varmints
