Possible Irrigation Adjustments

The ET Index supplied by United Water and South Jersey RC&D Council (use left navigation bar for your area on the ET Info page) is based on the soil water holding capacity for the average soil in your area, the average lawn, and an average sprinkler (application) rate.

The average soil for the Toms River area can keep a lawn thriving for three hot summer days without irrigation or adequate rainfall.  The same average soil in Haworth, Wilmington, or West Nyack maintains a healthy lawn for four days without irrigation or adequate rainfall.

The average lawn is an established lawn and has a rooting depth of 12 inches. If your lawn is newly established or gets heavy use (think football field) its rooting depth is closer to 6 inches. New and heavily used lawns should be irrigated half as much but twice as often.

The average sprinkler rate is 1 inch per hour. Your irrigation system specification should tell you what pressure to run the system and the resultant application rate. If you have your sprinkler application rate and it is more or less than 1” per hour, use the Watering Minutes by Application Flow Rate Table (below) to determine irrigation time in minutes.

Common Lawn Problems

Lawn problems are caused by a number of different factors. These factors include:

  • lawn diseases
  • lawn pests
  • competing weeds
  • the wrong grass mix
  • soil conditions
  • too much water
  • too little water

Rutgers Cooperative Extension has a number of publications on lawn care  and water conservation. These publications provide more detailed information on lawn problems. Experts are also available to answer landowner questions. The nearest Cooperative Extension office may be found here.

How much and how often do I water?

First determine your sprinkler application rate. Use the specifications manual for your sprinkler system. Or you may manually calculate the rate here. Next determine if you have an average lawn per the definition above. Now answer the following questions (Yes or No only) and follow the instructions provided.

1. My sprinkler application rate is one (1) inch per hour?

Yes - Water per ET Index Program. Go to step 2.
No - Determine sprinkler Application Rate and water per the Watering Minutes Table below. An example is provided at the bottom of this page.

spacer amount specified by the ET Index Program.

3. My lawn contains average soil for my area?

Yes - Water per ET Index Program.
No - Contact your local USDA National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) Irrigation Specialist to determine soil conditions and watering rates.

How do I use the Watering Minutes Table?

You have determined that your sprinkler application rate is 0.75”/hour. The daily ET Index for today is 0.50 inches, which tells you to irrigate for 30 minutes. With your lower sprinkler application rate, you should water your lawn for 40 minutes.
