The South Jersey Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. (SJRC&D), located in Columbus, New Jersey; was formed in 1974 to address environmental issues in South Jersey. The Council covers 4,710 sq. miles and includes the eleven southern counties of Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Salem. The Council is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization and is comprised of a County government and a Soil Conservation District representative from each of the eleven counties. The Council bridges the gap between local resource needs and community development providing a unique partnership between county, local and federal partners. Come to Delaware Estuary Levee Organization (DELO) meeting to learn more
WHO: Representatives of local and county government from southern New Jersey’s coastal communities along and near the Delaware, including mayors, freeholders, planning board members, engineers, mosquito commissioners, Soil Conservation Districts, etc. WHAT: Meeting of DELO to discuss Levee Inventory - Agenda follows WHERE - Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Office - directions below WHEN - Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 — 10am WHY: The State of New Jersey is funding an inventory of the levees of South Jersey through DEP Bureau of Flood Plain Management. USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has been commissioned to perform the task, estimated to take approximately 18 months. NRCS will need assistance from local communities to effectively and efficiently identify the location, extent and ownership of these aging structures. Please plan on attending the October 28 meeting to learn about the planned inventory and provide input for this process. The South Jersey Resource Conservation and Development (SJRC&D) Council brought together concerned individuals like you to discuss the potential problems of presented by our aging local levees after the nation witnessed the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Delaware Estuary Levee Organization, (DELO) was formed through this effort; DELO determined that an inventory of these deteriorating levees was necessary to assess their condition and the potential impact they may have on the region.
