Team Habitat
The Mission of Team Habitat is to direct the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of habitat for all wildlife species that live in or migrate through New Jersey. Team Habitat will be extremely conscious of the historic nature of the New Jersey environment and work to restore its cultural resources through scientific and practical methods.
Team Habitat is a group of conservationists dedicated to the protection of all wildlife species by creating, enhancing and maintaining quality habitat throughout New Jersey. Team Habitat will use wildlife and natural resource professionals to direct a paid and volunteer work force in performing habitat projects.
Team Habitat will perform its duties in various ways.
Team Habitat will act as a clearing house for habitat projects by:
Team Habitat will actively recruit new members from organizations, both nonprofit and for profit, federal and state government, private organizations, and individuals.
Team Habitat will coordinate a public outreach program using existing regional and state-wide newsletters, presentations at various local and state level meetings, and by direct mail to various users of federal and state funding programs, as well as articles in local newspapers, radio spots, and TV reports.
Outreach possibilities for Team Habitat
Bear Creek Conservancy
Actively managing over 110 acres of wetland and upland habitat. This site managed by volunteers. Tours can be arranged. BCC also has access to specialized equipment.
Cape Atlantic Soil Conservation District
Managers of a TruAx warm-season grass drill. Can provide some specialized GIS type assistance.
Ducks Unlimited
Reach local chapters via regional director. New Jersey membership is about 5,000 individuals. DU provides some money for project funding via MARSH.
Lenape Farms
Has undertaken a number of habitat improvement projects as a private landowner. Tours can be arranged to show before and after to interested participants.
National Wild Turkey Federation
Contact local chapters via regional directors. New Jersey membership is about 1500 individuals. NWTF provides some money for project funding via SUPERFUND. Superfund provides a 50% reimbursement for work performed.
NJ Fish and Wildlife
Supports creation of habitat on private lands. Has support of a number of influential nonprofit organizations interested in preserving open space for various objectives; i.e.: recreation (passive or active), habitat, or watershed protection.
Quail Unlimited
Contact local chapter via mail and at meetings. New Jersey membership is about 150 individuals. Southern Jersey QU Chapter has donated an incubator to a local school for a science project. The school holds a 2-day event to release hatched quail.
Ruffed Grouse Society
Contact local chapters via regional directors. National headquarters can put out a call to surrounding RGS chapters for assistance with local projects.
South Jersey RC&D Council
Act as facilitator for Team Habitat concept.
US Fish and Wildlife Service
Receive at least 100 calls for Partners for Fish and Wildlife funding.
USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service
NRCS should have funding soon due to the recent passage of the Farm Security Act.
